Today in @Nature, we report a new approach to studying human brain development and modeling disease in vivo. Human neural #assembloids and #organoids have opened new ways to study development in vitro, but they also have important limitations. Transplantation can provide a more physiological environment, yet human cortical cells then develop within a rodent brain that matures much faster, constraining their growth and integration. To address some of these limitations and obtain more advanced functional readouts relevant to disease biology, we generated #apallial mice, in which ~98% of the cortex and hippocampus fail to form, creating space for transplanted human cortical organoids to grow and integrate extensively. We call these #xenocortical mice (XCX). Nearly 7 years in the making. Congratulations to an extraordinary team and wonderful collaborators! Link to the article below 👇

ANNOUNCING THE 2026 WOLF PRIZE LAUREATE IN MEDICINE The 2026 Wolf Prize in Medicine is awarded to Charles S. Zuker of Columbia University and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, “for revolutionizing our understanding of taste, the last of our senses to be elucidated.” Sweet. Sour. Bitter. Salty. Umami: Zuker’s research revealed the cells and receptors responsible for each of the five basic tastes - and showed how those signals are encoded and represented in the brain. His experiments went even further: by rewiring taste receptors in mice, his team demonstrated that what makes something feel “sweet” or “bitter” is not simply the receptor itself, but the specific neural pathway activated between the tongue and the brain. By defining how chemical signals on the tongue are translated into perception and behavior, Zuker transformed taste from one of the least understood sensory systems into one of the best mapped in modern neuroscience. Congratulations to Charles S. Zuker, 2026 Wolf Prize Laureate in Medicine.

Probably and possibly one of the best speeches of all time. 😍 Mohammed Qahtani, a Saudi Arabian engineer, won the Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking. In his winning speech, he highlighted the power of words, stating that they can be a source of strength.

Here's the simplified story I once wrote on the work done by these two amazing scientists; Masashi Yanagisawa, Emmanuel Mignot when they received the Breakthrough Award in 2023. This year, in 2026 they won the Albert Lasker award. Probably a Nobel Prize loading in near future.
