There are 105,000 co-op apartments in Manhattan alone. Condos make up less than 30% of the ownership market. A co-op board can reject you for any reason and they don't have to tell you why. I've seen buyers with $3 million in cash get turned down because the board didn't like their interview. New York is the only city in America where buying a home means passing a stranger's personality test.

@VerminusM Israel is extremely social. Maybe to a fault. It's very hard to feel lonely here. This is both in the sense that many group activities are planned and friends call eachother. But also in places like coffee shops, there is just a lot of random interaction.

I'm still trembling with excitement. While waiting for President Trump’s decision on Iran, I began watching a documentary about 1948 and the Nakba. It is a rare film—genuinely objective, unflinching in its portrayal of the brutal truths on both sides. What struck me most deeply was how history keeps folding back on itself: the Arabs pressuring America through the weapon of oil, the Jews responding to direct attacks on their lives, and historians choosing to begin the narrative not with those attacks, but with the Jewish response that followed. This pattern felt painfully familiar. My father, who passed away years ago, once told me his story. In 1938, at just seventeen, he escaped Nazi Germany with his family after antisemitism cost his father his job. They arrived in Palestine as refugees only months before the British, buckling under Arab pressure during the Great Revolt of 1936–1938, issued the White Paper of 1939. That infamous policy effectively sealed the gates of Palestine to Jewish refugees fleeing for their lives—after Arab terrorists, including the forces inspired by the Syrian fighter Izz ad-Din al-Qassam (whose name Hamas later adopted for its military wing), had killed 262 British soldiers and roughly five hundred Jewish civilians. My father described what happened the day after the United Nations voted on November 29, 1947, to partition Palestine and establish a Jewish state: Arab forces attacked a bus just outside their home in Petah Tikva, murdering seven Jewish passengers—including a pregnant woman. The very next morning, my father, still a teenager, joined the Haganah to defend his parents’ home and his people. Watching the documentary, I suddenly saw it with my own eyes. There, in archival footage of Haganah fighters standing in formation in early 1948—before Israel had even declared independence—the camera slowly pans across rows of young men with wild, shoulder-length hair that would have looked more at home in the musical *Hair*. And there, in the second row, unmistakably, was my father. It is one of the most detailed and honest historical films I have seen on the subject. The first time I was flying to Beirut, the desk officer at London Heathrow asked before checking us in, “have you been to Israel?” We had rehearsed the answer to this question before. But Winston can't lie, so he said yes. I gave him the dirty look. There goes our vacation! "Well, you don't have the stamp on your passports so just make sure you tell the officer in Beirut that you haven't," she intoned. I was stressed out for the next 5 hours, and even more so when we had to face the border officer who, by the grace of God, did not ask us THE question (even though he took our passports to a secondary office for extra checks). Spending time in Beirut, you realize that it's the same Mediterranean light that bathes Tel Aviv; the sea is the same shade of shimmering blue because... well, it's the same sea. In both places, young people spill out of clubs at sunrise, the bass still thumping from rooftops that overlook the same ancient coastline. Both cities pulse with the same Levantine hunger for life: the clink of arak glasses, endless plates of hummus swirled with olive oil, the sudden eruption of dabke or house music that pulls strangers into a circle. Parties start on the rooftops of Gemmayze in Beirut and tumble down into Mar Mikhael’s narrow alleys; in Tel Aviv they begin on the sand at Gordon Beach and migrate to the warehouses of the Florentin district. These are both stylish people who love life, and who love to party. The energy is truly infectious. The accents may differ but something about this weird combination along with a deep sense of rootedness in community and the extended family really underscore how similar they were. And yet, there's been a wall between these two peoples. There are no flights stitching the 45 min hop across the water. No commercial trucks rumbling between the ports. Lebanese law forbids its citizens - inside the country or in the diaspora - from so much as speaking to an Israeli, a rule so absolute that some Lebanese friends of mine who live in Europe still glance over their shoulders before typing a reply to any Israeli even outside the country, whether for business or pleasure. I spent evenings in Beirut listening to Lebanese friends speak of Israelis not as the enemy but as people caught in the same endless loop of fear and longing. Decades of Hezbollah’s shadow have hollowed out parts of Lebanon, turning the south into a garrison and the economy into a ruin. Yet in the cafés of Achrafieh and the mountain villages above the city you hear it more and more: a quiet, exhausted recognition that the real hostage-takers are not across the border but inside it. I keep imagining the day the question at Beirut airport changes. I keep picturing the first flight from Rafic Harari to Ben Gurion. One day the music will be louder than the fear. One day the Lebanese and the Israelis will throw the party the rest of the world has been waiting for. I hope this is the first step:

I hate these types of posts. Seen same from SF. Yes, parts of New York are beautiful. But, I also had to step over human feces on gorgeous sunny Sunday morning. It’s worth noticing the hellhole aspects, even when the rich can insulate themselves better than the rubes.

North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the “Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.” Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!
