There are ~233M licensed drivers in the US. Driving can be impaired by drugs, alcohol, age, youth, grief, rage, distraction, exhaustion, jet lag, medications, acute illness, chronic illness, children, friends, weather, time and chance. Our safety plan: none of that ever happens.

Community feedback is a double edged sword. “I may be inconvenienced while sitting in my climate controlled motorized easy chair.” and “I don’t want to die as I ride my bike to work” are different in both degree and kind yet the first is often prioritized over the second.

I re-read Appleyard's iconic study of traffic levels and resident behavior in San Francisco. True today as it was 50 years ago; cars degrade the urban realm and turn streets into hostile, uninviting places. Streets can be so much more. onlinepubs.trb.org/Onlinepubs/hrr…
Where’s the top half?
Why aren't young people having kids? Because not only are housing+education costs too high, but they believe they have to uproot their entire life if/when they have children We need to make it easier to have little kids in the city (because that's where young people live)

Ginther’s Development Dept. should have never signed off for occupancy. This issue is as much on Ginther as it is on Greyhnd & COTA. The 3 of them should have been working together on a viable long term solution to keep Greyhnd dwtn & incorporate it into the city's transit plan

Most people would love to live in a beautiful city where they don't need a car to get around. The problem is, there aren't many places like this. The few that offer economic opportunity with many things to do are unaffordable because they're so scarce. We should build more!

New videos on cities and transportation every Wednesday. https://t.co/WVjqtam1LyThe car industry has had a stranglehold on US transportation for nearly a century. They keep trying to sell a new iteration of auto supremacy. Urban space really is a zero sum game: two objects cannot occupy the same space. We can have cities for people or for cars. Not both.
Cementing EV charging on our curbs at thousands of locations across New York City is a huge mistake. To meet our climate goals — and not lock in car dependency — we need to invest in public transit, walking, and biking. nyc.streetsblog.org/2024/02/22/pow…

The town hall will provide an opportunity for community members to voice their opinions, ask questions, and provide feedback on the proposed changes. Your participation in this event is crucial in helping us create a design that reflects the needs and desires of the community.
You can see the motorist pulling the standard Sullivant Avenue turn-lane pass in this video. He was over 70 mph. Road design failure he could even get going that fast but maybe some more half-measures from the city will do the trick!
@rooster_ohio How fucking fast do you have to be going to do that?

You can avoid these crazy charges by not bringing a truck into the most dense, transit rich city in the world. A truck takes about as much space to store as a studio apartment and brings noise and air pollution, road damage and risk of injury or death. Take the train.

The question is not if your government can afford to invest in cycling and walking. The question is if they can afford not to. The enormous costs of individual driving are currently paid for by society at large.

To sell more cars, the Nat'l Auto Dealers Assn wanted more roads and parking. So it wrote scripts for local broadcasters to read on air as news. They included scripted statements that were to be attributed to a local auto dealer speaking as a concerned citizen. (NADA, June 1952)
Four lane roads in our cities and neighborhoods are signs of policy failures. The good news is that they can be transformed 👇
May 2022 vs. June 2023. In one year time, the Sint-Josephlaan in Utrecht underwent a major metamorphosis: from a four-lane city ring road to a two-lane road for local traffic. Less car traffic, new trees, more green, cleaner air, improved livability. A win on many levels!
We focus way too much on light rail in the US It is extremely costly and lower ROI than other options We cite successes near rail lines that are really due to upzoning, not demand (people still drive) At $200M per MILE of rail we would be much better off subsidizing ebikes
