7 days agoMost people would love to live in a beautiful city where they don't need a car to get around.
The problem is, there aren't many places like this. The few that offer economic opportunity with many things to do are unaffordable because they're so scarce. We should build more!

It remains one of the most searing and prescient takedowns of urban highways.

2 months ago@CCouncilReview @benlkeith And Columbus is trying to position themselves to have as good an application as possible? Maybe this could impacts how much money they request? Just speculating/spitballing, I obviously don’t understand how all of this works…

Austin @texcapprezjimmy
2 months ago@CCouncilReview @benlkeith Ok, 2024, my bad. And I understand that it’s contingent on Columbus bringing their half (or whatever) to the table, which for Columbus would be through the sales tax, but it’s still an application, right? Like, even if we do pass it, the feds can still say no, right?…

Austin @texcapprezjimmy
2 months ago@CCouncilReview @benlkeith Perhaps they have to do the transit corridors soon, on account of the LinkUs ballot initiative this fall, so that their application for federal transit $$ is more competitive. In other words, the feds need to see some zoning activity along corridors before OK into their $$…?

2 months ago"How is making it cheaper for a rich developer to build a luxury apartment 5-over-1 going to increase affordable housing?" When there's more housing than there are tenants, landlords have to lower rents to compete with each other for tenants.

2 months agoWhy is it possible to fly from Bristol to Edinburgh for £26 but it’ll cost me £213 on the train? Tax the shit out of the airlines and nationalise the railways already.

2 months agoMy first @voxdotcom story is a deep dive asking how transit can avoid a downward spiral. Answer: 1) Focus on providing quality service that competes w/cars 2) Minimize distractions (including bus electrification and going fare-free) 🧵 below vox.com/future-perfect…

2 months ago@reroutethe23 @lourdesforcbus @SG_Hardin @ColumbusDPS Every time I’m there I see a line of cars parked on the east side of the street (whether at meters during legal times or illegally to load/unload) and 3-5 buses stuck in mixed (car) traffic. Seriously messed up priorities for such a big city in a key area…

Austin @texcapprezjimmy
2 months ago@reroutethe23 @lourdesforcbus @SG_Hardin @ColumbusDPS Serious question, what’s more needed on High Street adjacent to campus, dedicated bus lanes, or protected cycle tracks? I’m 50/50. (Of course the real answer is: both.)

2 months agoBREAKING: The federal e-bike bill is BACK.
A new proposal would give Americans up to $1,500 off a new e-bike.
This bill is similar to its predecessor, which came tantalizingly close to passing last year. BUT there are some key differences.

2 months ago@travis_robert Using google search to cherry pick evidence isn’t as compelling an argument as you think it is. I know you’re pissed at NYPD, for lots of legitimate reasons, but saying it was “probably a drunk cop” who caused that crash—without evidence—hurts our cause more than it helps.
