Senator Luján's statement on Justice Breyer's retirement:
I'm grateful for Justice Breyer's years of service. As we consider who will take his place on the Supreme Court, I'm hopeful we will confirm a justice who reflects the people and values of our country, and who will defend our reproductive rights, voting rights, and civil rights.
Justice Breyer has led an exemplary & distinguished career in public service. I’m grateful to him for all that he has done for our country.
I support @POTUS’s pledge to nominate the first Black woman to the Supreme Court. The Court should reflect the diversity of our country.
With this Supreme Court vacancy, President Biden has the opportunity to nominate someone who will bring diversity, experience, and an evenhanded approach to the administration of justice. I look forward to moving the President’s nominee expeditiously through the Committee.
I thank Justice Breyer for his 27 years on the U.S.
Supreme Court & lifelong dedication to upholding the rule of law. Filling a
#SCOTUS vacancy is one of the most pivotal duties of the President – I look
forward to reviewing @POTUS' nomination. My full statement:
Justice Breyer’s service has been unsurpassed in distinction as a pragmatic progressive—ever an optimist, but grounded firmly in the real-life consequences of the Court’s decisions. He is a brilliant scholar&thinker who has sought practical, workable solutions in a divided Court. twitter.com/nprpolitics/st…
Thank you Justice Breyer for your decades of service.
The Senate should fill this vacancy as quickly as possible, and I look forward to reviewing the record, background, and legal philosophy of whoever @POTUS nominates.
I have known Justice Breyer since he was a counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee, where he served with distinction, and Marcelle and I have known him well through all these years. He has been an excellent jurist who has been a great credit to the Court and to the nation.
I thank Justice Breyer for his decades serving the Court and the nation. He has been a trusted voice on the bench with a first-rate legal mind.
President Biden’s Supreme Court nominee will receive a prompt hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee and be considered and confirmed by the full United States Senate with all deliberate speed.
Justice Breyer has served his country with the highest possible distinction
His work and decisions on the biggest issues of our time—including voting rights, environment, women’s reproductive freedom, ACA—were hugely consequential
America owes him an enormous debt of gratitude
The introduction of the vital America COMPETES Act of 2022 in the House is an important step forward to passing a final bill into law.
We have no time to waste in improving competitiveness, strengthening our lead in global innovation, and addressing supply chain challenges.
🚨 Major news for Montana: we just reached the lowest unemployment rate ever recorded in the Treasure State.
The American Rescue Plan is giving our economy the boost it needs to get folks back to work.
Great news—new federal funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will help connect more people to @spokanetransit. This is going to make a big difference for commuters and help create new job opportunities for WA state.
Here in the desert, water is our most precious resource. The bipartisan infrastructure law I helped pass is going to upgrade western water systems and improve clean water access in Arizona.
This is great news!

Over 100,000 Nevadans were able to sign up for affordable health care coverage through Open Enrollment this year, with the vast majority getting plans at lower costs because of the American Rescue Plan. I’ll keep working to lower health care costs for Nevadans in every community.
$60 million dollars is heading straight to New Mexico and Tribes to help build climate and natural disaster resilience and improve water infrastructure—courtesy of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Reminder: not a single Republican voted for the American Rescue Plan that helped deliver record job growth and a 3.9% unemployment rate.
Today marks nine years since President Obama's Department of Defense rescinded the ridiculous exclusion of women in combat.
Because, *of course* America’s daughters can defend her in combat as well as her sons.
Am I right, ladies?💪
Our bipartisan infrastructure law is all about creating jobs and lowering costs for working families.
By upgrading our roads, bridges, airports, and seaports, we'll smooth the supply chain and grow our economy—without raising taxes on a single American family.
Proud to have @SecFudge and #TeamMaryland in Baltimore today to announce $6M in #InfrastructureBill funding for housing improvement and removing health hazards in homes.
Vulnerable populations should not be left behind. All MDers should be safe and secure in their homes.

In one year, President Biden has nominated as many Black women to serve on the federal appeals courts as there were in all of U.S. history when he first took office.
