@BeatTheCult The simplest answer is "I don't know", which is perfectly acceptable, since technically we don't, religion is nothing more than pretending to know things you don't know. Plenty of plausible theory's, but nothing we can point to and say "this", yet.

@VicedRhino Consider the following rule; The letter “g” makes the /j/ sound when followed by an “e,” “i” or “y”, i.e. gentle, giant, gyroscope, since it is spoken as a word, and "I" follows "G", the "J" sound is apropos. Not sure why there's any "debate".
