The scaling back and scrapping of HS2 is one of the biggest symbols of failure in this country. But especially this - failing to have a direct connection between Manchester and Paris for want of a short tunnel in London. Brunel would’ve constructed this in a weekend as a side gig

I've just seen among all the other bad news for the arts in Birmingham that the council is closing 25 out of 36 libraries - genuine cultural vandalism. Libraries are one of the few community resources left in the UK: they offer incalculable support and value.

I'll take a stab and say that letting them rot and eventually having to demolish them would be a bit more depressing. Adaptive reuse of these types of spaces is great. Especially with another third place like a coffee shop.

We still have an ozone layer because we phased OUT (rather than phase DOWN) CFCs. We still hear birdsong in spring because we phased OUT (rather than phase DOWN) DDT. A livable climate requires that we phase OUT rather than phase DOWN fossil fuels.
