How to destroy the confidence of a young pupil in the UK. Give her a national test and tell her everything she did is wrong. And now, in the UK, with phonics dominating everything, no one really knows how to teach spelling!
Just had a lovely meal in Canary Wharf East London. It turns out that the waitress is also a teaching assistant who's trying to teach synthetic phonics. She says that the kids aren't interested, and don't have any concentration for phonics. It makes you think!

Saw this at London Stansted Airport. I like people playing with words but happy is the real word where y represents 'ee' as much as ee, as is shown by worry. Why do the Phonatixs insist on only allowing pupils to to learn ee first when they all see Happy Birthday regularly?
I read an article today praising J K Rowling for standing up to trans extremism. Yes, we understand people who sincerely feel they identify as a different gender but we can't abolish 'men and women'. In early literacy in the UK, phonics extremists want to abolish letter names.
This 'no answer to a Fundamental question' is a typical response from SSP advocates and strengthens my whole language convictions even more! FYI, we do memorize many thousands of words over time enabling fluent effortless reading as both their image and meaning are well known.

It's great to help someone who's behind with their reading (I'm also working with a 7 year old who's enjoying reading for the first time in his life). But I think the child would benefit more from seeing word families of one gpc: rain, train, pain rather than all GPCs together.

They also have direct and indirect effect on children's reading development as they enter school. It's tragic that the current obsession with synthetic phonics has eroded the supreme importance of these skills. One day we'll look back and wonder how this was ever allowed.
The very core of what I believe: both spoken and written language is primarily about words, not individual sounds in isolation. As usual, you've put it better than I can!
That's really wrong. Children should always be allowed to see the word because that's what we do in reading! But please don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. At the level of the book shown, we should be aiming for supporting fluent reading. Here's my grandson reading.

I make an effort to explain the #scienceofreading #sor (but really, it’s just science!) … but Sharon Vaughn clarifies many misconceptions about the science probably better than anyone: misconception number 1: we understand and implement” evidence-based reading instruction.
When have you ever seen any publisher of reading programs say their program is not evidence or science based? They all do, and have for decades It. Is. Marketing. [Big tobacco had research showing cigarettes didn't cause cancer, remember]

@londonjohn9 Here in the US there’s a dazzling array of reading approaches. Great teachers ignore most of it and foster a love of story with real books.
So now the podcast seems to acknowledge that learning to read is more complex than the current SOR movement’s version. Now the podcast brings in implicit learning and the role of wide reading. Now the podcast uses terms like “complex task.”
Now the podcast acknowledges that strict top-down policies (aka legislation by states) don’t really work. Now the podcast mentions the need to course correct in case things don’t work out. Because it’s “messy.”
Perhaps if those who had the largest voices in pushing SOR policies that don’t reflect all the available research had listened to all the voices who asked them to consider the complexity of literacy acquisition, we wouldn’t be in the position to have to course correct already.
Living through the most drastic pendulum swing of my 30+ years in early literacy is disheartening, to say the least. So upsetting. Maybe we need to be more careful about who we choose to follow.
