Worldwide access to GPT4 combined with insane acceleration in automation in China poses an immediate “we are the next Europe” dilemma in the US. We are so far behind on manufacturing automation (when compared to leaders in CN) that senior US tech HW engineers I know are clueless.

I introduced myfolks to ChatGPT on Wednesday. Dad is a COBOL freelance programmer from the 70s. He maintains his old program and is vicarious through others that still use it. Retired for 25 years but engineers will always be proud. Build niche products in high growth markets.

Surprise of today: industrial real estate rents in San Diego and Pittsburgh are the same. SD is lower cost to lease refurbished class B/C. Pittsburgh is lower cost to buy and build out.

Super lucky that our products are small and all air freight. This Long Beach container bottleneck is going to distress lots of businesses if they are levered and inventory turnover goes off the cliff.

Intel really bungled their corporate communication about the Realsense business unit change vs. product line EoL. I can only imagine how furious the Intel sales reps were. Their distributors are still playing damage control. Messaging is everything in marketing and PR.

Semi-skilled labor rates are now equivalent between Kunshan (Shanghai) and Otay Mesa (Tijuana). Fully burdened growth rates in China outpaced Mexico. And both Apple and Amazon positioned their HWE teams in San Diego. Paradigm shift is happening

How much more will Waymo need to raise before they can properly generate revenue? Or become a Tier 1 or OEM? My guess: ~$16B-$20B and 10 years, based on this round. I'll bet their Honeycomb LiDAR 'side-hustle' is better than their L4 business. techcrunch.com/2021/06/16/way…
