I might have stopped making these uplifting videos. However, these heartfelt notes I received kept me on this path, as they constantly made me realize and reminded the significance of joy and hope, especially for those dealing with substantial pain, suffering, and vulnerabilities 🙏🏽🧡

I have created numerous videos this year, in various locations, with different people. However, this particular video stands out as not only the best one but also the most meaningful in many ways. It was a great honour for me to dance with an Indigenous grandmother and her two grandchildren, as it highlighted the importance of building cross-cultural bridges, finding humanity at a deep level, and acknowledging past events while focusing on future reconciliation. I am extremely grateful to my friend, Sarah Chisholm, who worked tirelessly and selflessly with me to bring this project to life. Equally grateful I am to Alex Lye for adding the traditional highland dancing element to this fusion. The video I am sharing is a short clip. The more I hear from the Covid enquiry, the more I think that the PM and the majority of ministers did not have the intellectual tools necessary to understand scientific advice and therefore to be able to weigh it successfully alongside economics, social science etc. In my view this can be traced to educational failure - they weren’t taught or didn’t learn the basics of science alongside their chosen disciplines. This also applies the other way round to scientists of course. Breadth of knowledge is key, as well as specialisation / expertise, and I don’t think our system delivered that in the 80s and 90s when I (and they) went to University - whether it does that today is an open question. I think we need to be producing more polymaths.

Dance, sleep, and eat by Lake Superior. Life's journey may not be flawless, but I have discovered my own version of perfection and am relishing in this moment. The past is gone, and although I have grieved over a few things too, I have also forgiven and moved on too, and found joy. As for the future, I know nothing about it. The present is my dear friend, and I am in the good company of my dear friend, “present.” 🙏🏽

@markoftheD Definitely 20s. Fortunately for me that coincided with the greatest era of rock music..1989 and onwards. Stone Roses, Nirvana, the rise of Radiohead etc. Added bonus we still had many of the greats kicking around like Bowie.

It’s not too hard, but let’s spell it out! Science is a satisfactory philosophy of ignorance. One starts in a position of not knowing and being comfortable and indeed delighted and excited in not knowing. One then starts to investigate - do experiments or observe Nature. The key is not to get into an entrenched position and instead to allow your knowledge to develop as new data and understanding emerge. If you truly don’t have the data or understanding to come to an informed view, then the advice is not to guess and loudly proclaim your guess to the world but to shut up and do some work. A little northern in phrasing perhaps, but I am from Oldham.

Let’s use the tweet below to explain something about why science is successful and politics today is largely dysfunctional. The person to which Jim responded asks for an apology if new data or evidence is presented which causes someone to change their view. Why? The process of updating ones view as new information or knowledge is acquired is central to science, and by extension to our rational understanding of the world. Demanding an apology from someone who engages in this vital activity is tantamount to demanding an apology for the enlightenment. Essentially, it represents the view that it is a personal insult to disagree over the interpretation of data. Nature, however, doesn’t care about your feelings and if it turns out that your opinion is wrong, no apology is necessary and indeed celebration is in order because you’ve learnt something new about Nature.

@Peter_Fitz Perhaps in the last 20 years, the movement to betting on #NRL, #AFL cricket etc, has diminished the status of horse racing in this country.
