This might be the pinnacle moment of the strongest El Niño in history. Pacific Super Typhoon Champi is unbelievable by every metric. A buoy just measured a ~909 MBAR pressure at the edge of her 40+ mile-wide eye, which has now reached a blistering dryness of -10.94 C. Her eyewall is a 180+ MPH (290+ kph) buzzsaw of cyclonic violence, and her CDO is a perfect Saturnian ring of icy, -110 F (-80 C) convective thunderstorms. And she is still. Getting. Stronger.

Here are the latest rainfall and wind gust forecasts for our area this Sunday. A Flood Watch has been issued for the Riv/SBD County mtns and deserts, and all of San Diego County. Stay tuned through the weekend as the track of TS Rachel continues to affect the forecast.

The explosive transformation of Hurricane Nolo to the south of Hawaii. From a struggling, misshapen CAT 1 storm to an annular, CAT 4 monster in less than 30 hours. With winds now at 155 MPH, a 929 MBAR eye that’s warmer and drier than ever (-16.9 C), and a superchilling doughnut ring of convection, Nolo is on the absolute precipice of Category 5 status. A potentially historic upgrade from the NHC is imminent.

Hurricane Polo has SHATTERED the record for the longest duration of CAT 5 winds ever documented in a Pacific Hurricane, and it’s not even close. His core sustained winds have now been at 158+ MPH for a combined 50 HOURS in total. The previous record was 42 hours, and only 4 other storms in the Atlantic Basin have maintained Category 5 status for longer.

The Nor'easter has gone through incredible bombogenesis, which has dropped nearly 40 mb over the past 24 hours and is currently at 972 mb at the center where you can see an eye has developed. This is the kind of Nor'easter you read about in textbooks. Remarkable.

Hurricane Rafael continues to impress in the Gulf of Mexico tonight with a well-defined eye, central pressure of 965 mb, and maximum sustained winds of 105 mph. However, it will begin weakening soon thanks to wind shear/cooler waters and is not expected to be a threat to the US.

This isn’t getting nearly enough attention. Phoenix may have just experienced the most extraordinary heatwave in American history. The city endured 21 consecutive days of record-breaking high temperatures, shattering the previous record of 14 days set in Burlington, Iowa, during the Dust Bowl Era in 1936. Today marked the first day since September 24th that Phoenix didn’t hit a new record high. Truly mind-blowing.
