Some hair loss medications make shedding WORSE before it gets better.
This is because they reset the hair cycle, allowing stronger, healthier hair to grow in after starting treatment.
This is usually normal and generally read as a sign the medication is working as intended.
Hats, shampoo, hair dye, brushing, and hard water DO NOT cause pattern hair loss.
The appeal is obvious: those are easy, low-stakes things you can control.
Pattern loss is driven by genetics and androgens, which you cannot control as easily, leading to avoiding the issue.
Creatine causing hair loss is a MYTH.
The fear traces back to one small study showing a rise in DHT, while other studies found no difference in DHT or DHT-to-testosterone ratio.
The ketoconazole shampoo in the hair loss studies is 2%, which is prescription-only in the US.
The Nizoral on the drugstore shelf is 1%.
The evidence for ketoconazole is limited either way, and it is an add-on, not a treatment that holds hair on its own.
Medical hair recovery is not linear.
In a five-year study of 2% minoxidil, growth peaked in year one and declined gradually afterward. Stop minoxidil, and the results go.
The finasteride label notes reversal within 12 months of stopping. Treatment is designed to be indefinite.
Hair loss, physician-reviewed, online.
Finasteride and minoxidil are the FDA-approved core; the rest are add-ons. Whether either fits you, and the side-effect trade-off, is a physician's call.
Happyglow connects you with licensed providers who can evaluate your situation.
Only around 9% of your follicles are resting at any one time, and shedding 100 to 150 of them a day is normal:
Hair in the drain is not automatically a problem. And whatever changed your hair happened months before you could see it.
Struggling with androgenetic hair loss? No supplement has been shown to do what the DHT inhibitors do.
Biotin, the best-known hair supplement, did no better than placebo in the highest-quality study.
A 2024 review found that its use for hair is not supported.
Not everyone needs tretinoin. Alternatives like over-the-counter retinoids, adapalene, or azelaic acid can all be options, too.

Strength is not speed!
0.05% and 0.1% may offer slight efficacy gains over 0.025% but increase irritation risk.
For aging, extend to the neck and the backs of the hands, which show age as much as the face.
Tretinoin was FDA-approved for acne in 1971 and for aging in 1995. It's not just a trend; it's a seriously effective medication.
Here's how it actually works and how to get through the first six weeks of treatment: 🧵👇
As tempting as it is to check your hair every day and get discouraged after a few weeks, the hair cycle just doesn't move on that timeframe!
Whatever changed in your hair happened months before you could see it.
Our bodies were built for scarcity.
The modern food environment is designed to hijack them.
Using tools like GLP-1s for a modern problem isn't cheating.
Put moisturizer on BEFORE tretinoin, not just after.
It softens the contact with the skin and takes the edge off during the adjustment weeks.
You still get peeling, dryness, and sun sensitivity to manage, but you get less first-month irritation.
