One of the problems with housing discourse is that left-NIMBYs conflate the incentives of developers with the incentives of landlords. Unlike developers, landlords *do* stand to lose money from new housing. That's why a lot of landlords are NIMBYs!

When NIMBYs say they want affordable housing but it just needs to meet certain criteria, this is what they mean. Greenwich, CT code says you need to build 1.5 parking spaces per bedroom for a 3-bedroom apt. Because of course affordable 3BR apartment renters have 4.5 cars.

I have said this over and over and over and over again: if California adopted Texas' housing policies, it would become a completely unstoppable economic powerhouse. It would be eating Texas' lunch. California actively chooses to make itself poorer, to satisfy rich NIMBYs.

Whats notable about this Austin rent trend is that its coinciding with massive tech worker growth. Illustrating that it wasnt a given an in-migrarion of tech workers into San Francisco would lead to non stop rent spikes for 20 years.
