It's a good talk. (And I took a lot of notes while listening to it.) But has WL corrected their "early error"? Aren't today's BL students still being tossed into books before they've acquired the knowledge/skills to initiate self-teaching? seidenbergreading.net/2021/11/20/cla…

Respectfully, I think we will come to teach reading better when our focus is on the child instead of an approach/program/argument of choice. Time better spent on building instructional strategies (CREATE).

I hear him saying that both SoR programs and WL programs are out of balance
@Spell2Read @NickieSimonetti @londonjohn9 @catteach @mazst @DoctorSam7 @JohnBaldLangLit @dylanwiliam @ged10 @CuriousReader13 @dmounty14 @ReadingShift @ray42164 @DrMPaff @GovTutor @ReadingShanahan @SaraJPeden @Li22yH @jeffrey_bowers @KirstenDuncombe @jdtdobson @teachforever54 @emzanzot @rfarmer27 @annarzepeckaka1 @publicschoolrsp @DrMaryHoward @borneo_pete @buckingham_j @nellkduke I think he says WL folk use an invalid assumption about how we learn to read. (And SoR folk focus on all being taught phonics for too long.)

Closes down potential for differentiation I suggest
@dmounty14 @Spell2Read @NickieSimonetti @londonjohn9 @catteach @mazst @DoctorSam7 @JohnBaldLangLit @dylanwiliam @ged10 @CuriousReader13 @ReadingShift @ray42164 @DrMPaff @GovTutor @ReadingShanahan @SaraJPeden @Li22yH @jeffrey_bowers @KirstenDuncombe @jdtdobson @teachforever54 @emzanzot @rfarmer27 @annarzepeckaka1 @publicschoolrsp @DrMaryHoward @borneo_pete @buckingham_j @nellkduke Because acquiring the 'code' SSP ensures that all children are using it to decode. I get Seidenbegr's point about explicit phonics can go too far. The decision is one a teacher has to make about when a child is using phonics to decide and not using other techniques.

In my experience it's unnecessary to control the pgcs/gpcs in a linear fashion. My thoughts are that it would be limiting & create cog dissonance for students trying to make sense of enviro print etc
