My cat has gone for a wander, I was calling out for him when I received a text message and for a brief moment I genuinely expected it to be him messaging me

Only Connect is on tonight at 8pm! But Rod Liddle, and others who find the intros difficult, would be advised to tune in at 8.02, by which time I'll have finished banging on about Helen who lives in The Matrix and has written us an anxious letter. #OnlyConnect, 8.02pm @BBCTwo

@1979motorhead @SophyRidgeSky Why would he pay himself if he’s being offered it free by the club? Would you? Absurd suggestion.

Oh you want to change plans? Do something completely different than the logistics I’ve envisioned & as such cemented in my head? Sure that’s fine. I can be normal about that. Please excuse me for 10 minutes. If you hear screaming it is unrelated

@CreativeMFreak @wwxwashere Exactly! If you don’t have the dad/daddy distinction in your language (and obviously most don’t) it’s very hard to render it. It’s closer to maître or patron in some ways.

@BloodyButton @wwxwashere But remember there’s a massive difference between “daddy” and “dad”. I really can’t imagine any English native speaking person calling a sexual partner “dad” 🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮 grossgrossgrossGROSS! Translating it with the way you address your father is not the vibe 😂😭

I remember many years ago when working in Slovenia, a colleague told me that the film “Everyone Says ‘I Love You’” had been really unsuccessful there because the translation of the title sounded ridiculous. No-one ever really says “ljubim te”!

@wwxwashere I'd rather be dead than read the words "I love you" in my first language. Like, the levels of CRINGE... 😭☠

@terrified_kitty @wwxwashere Most people stop using daddy to mean their male parent once they get to the age of about 8-10ish. (Some girls continue into their teens and beyond but most don’t.) So when “daddy” is used by adults it has a few other meanings and doesn’t automatically make you imagine a parent.

the real reason is because the romantic and the kinky stuff feels a lot more mortifying to read in our native languages

one of the reasons non native english speakers prefer reading in english is because english is objectively a lot easier than our native languages & is a lot more accessible in terms of resources because it is treated as a global language. hope this helps.
