Your reading curriculum won't matter if you can't retain your teachers.
If I were a teacher concerned about more programs being added to the literacy block in the name of SoR, here are two questions I would be asking: 1. When we bring in more foundational reading skill practice/resources, what are we pushing out? Possibilities: (1/2)

at the very core of the so-called word gap is a raciolinguistic ideology which frames the language practices of marginalised communities as lacking. it is a victim blaming, deficit-based concept which simply diverts attention away from structural and systemic inequalities.
I stay highly critical of the idea that we know a certain way to help kids learn and teachers/ professors/whomever are just choosing not to employ it. The literature shows learning is complicated and highly context-dependent. We also have a lot more to learn about our brains.
The recent “pile on” against critical pedagogy is, imo, symptomatic of the reductive nature of thinking in the last few years, centred in a cognitive only approach to learning - wanting to treat CYP as ‘brains in jars’ rather than holistic beings in a social environment.
@MarcusLuther6 College educators come on this app every day and tell us that students aren’t prepared to do the critical thinking college requires. We have to be honest about what we sacrifice when students are “prepared” to test well standardly, but not prepared to think at a higher level.

Hey - if your entire timeline is filled with disdain towards certain literacy researchers who don’t align with your teaching/learning philosophies (a la SoR vs BL, etc.) and you’re silent about certain literacy folks aligning themselves with M4L, maybe it’s time to reflect…
looking at some of these literacy curriculum review tools and wow there’s a lot of disagreement about how the “science” should translate into curriculum design and implementation
Never trust anyone who claims a boxed curriculum is the answer to educational inequity.
If you were wondering when teachers would start to be blamed for some of the failures of the SoR movement, it’s already started:
Two ed policy conversations are spinning in parallel orbits, doomed never to intersect. The 1st emphasizes importance of curricula, esp SoR, in pub schs. A 2nd universe is all YOLO: states set up no qual control for voucher schs & no curric oversight, testing, or quality control

My education hot take is that almost every pedagogical practice has good & useful applications for different combinations of humans in different contexts.
Learning is so much the confluence of variable contextual factors that I don't think replicability makes a lot of sense most of the time: the context itself very often is the intervention.

So much school reform fails because it is additive in nature. For everything you add, you have to take something away. Equilibrium is the key. But that isn't how reform tends to work. It just adds and adds and adds. No wonder it mostly slides off into the gutter of history.
