When you start as an S&C coach, you can’t wait to implement the fancy training methods you learned whilst studying. But, eventually you realise the fancy training methods are a tiny part of what athletes need & keeping it simple, 99% of the time, is the way to go. Agree?
Single leg eccentric hamstring curls with a slider, are one of the GOAT hamstring exercises. Cues I like to use: • Toes towards your head. • Squeeze your glutes. • Dig your heel into the ground hard, for 1 second, before dropping your hips down. What cues do you use?
I pride myself on showing up. I really didn’t want to do the below session today. But, I got it done ✅
Eccentric hamstring curls with sliders (barbell loaded). Any other S&C coaches program these? They’re a great glute and hamstring exercise. I’ll have people get good at them with no weight first, then I have them put a dumbbell on their hips, then they progress to a barbell.
My advice for prospective S&C coaches: Don’t go straight to university. Spend 1 year coaching in a gym first. The experience will be invaluable. Plus, you’ll get a feel for whether or not you like coaching people. It’s a try before you buy. Experienced coaches, do you agree?
Prone Cuban Press. Any other S&C coaches program this exercise for their athletes? I love it, as a warm-up or filler exercise, for any contact/overhead/throwing athletes.
One of the cool things about coaching has been that it’s forced me to become a better communicator and this has then carried over to my personal life (eg I’m far better at having tough conversations than I used to be). Have any other S&C coaches found the same thing?
Kickstand squats. Any S&C coaches program these for their athletes? Do you like them? I think they’re a good split squat variation. I like that athletes can self regulate by putting less/more weight through the back leg (ie less weight through the back leg makes them harder).
It’s easy to get carried away talking about the negative aspects of being an S&C coach. But, there are lots of positives; the whole job is helping people better themselves/achieve goals & you get to do it wearing sweatpants. What’s your favourite thing about being an S&C coach?
Do any other S&C coaches program the standing triple jump for their athletes? Why/why don’t you like it? I think it’s a nice progression from continuous broad jumps.
From what I see, most S&C coaches would probably benefit from doing more speed work (because you learn so much from doing it yourself) and doing more conditioning (because you know, health). Another field session in the books ✅ 📚 The longer shuttles sucked 🥵😂
Does anyone feel like they ever 100% know what they’re doing? I honestly never really feel like I know what I’m doing 😂 But, I don’t let that stop me and I don’t think it’s a bad thing. I think a little bit of self-doubt/imposter feelings help keep you sharp.
Trap bar clean pulls. Do any other S&C coaches program these for their athletes? I like them as a late pre-season/in-season exercise, as a way to shift the focus from max strength to strength-speed.

@Coachgriffin88 Not with a barbell. We typically do it single leg. Love that exercise.

@Coachgriffin88 We perform them with athlete Maintaining a bridge throughout extension & flexion. Have not done so with barbell loading.
@Coachgriffin88 I do it with a foam roller and no extra weight. For about 3-4 reps, then I cramp and cry and can't run for a few days because of DOMS. Great exercise 4/5 would recommend

In actuality, reflexes become conditioned and more permanent around the age of 10-12 years. Reflexes are extremely difficult to develop in puberty years. This supports the notion that multi-lateral development and global skill acquisition is crucial to training the young athlete.…
My new fitness influencer BS test. Is a 4 minute mile predominately aerobic or anaerobic? Should be easy...but you'd be surprised how many fail that test. Look for depth and understanding, not superficial BS.
